Click either button to Join FLOWERS, AND TREES AND THORNS, OH MY!!! Within the Gladys Porter Zoo compound in Brownsville, Texas, there I saw the most beautiful flowering tree, but it was also such a lethal looking tree. And, tho I can take pride in knowing a lot of names for hundreds of flowers, plants, bushes and trees...I DID NOT know this species. In fact, long time ago...when I was a kid and all our travels, I remember seeing one of these. But then, at that time in my life, I wasn't interested in 'growing or knowing'. The only thing I knew back then was if it's edible, my dad can grow it. [Did I ever tell you about his experimenting on his acreage all sorts of things you wouldn't think of growing in Colorado? Like pineapples and even peanuts? ---yep, he grew many things. And all quite successful too. The pineapples produced --but small compared to Hawai'i's huge ones. And the peanuts? Yep, they produced also...quite a crop I might add.

As always, I save my Monday posting for nothing of memes, or any blog games...it's just 'my day' of things in general. A little bit of historical, today, for my eclectic Monday Morsels. It's about a little community that once was. It was a few miles northwest of the city, Corpus Christi, in the 1800s. Now, today, it's actually part of the city limits of Corpus...of course, still in the northwestern boundaries. At one time, in its beginnings, it was called The MOTTS, named after the English/German settlement. But, then changed to Nuecestown, naming it after the close-by river, the Nueces River [pronounced new AY seas -meaning pecan/nut]. The settlement eventually had a permanent Post Office, making it 'on the map'...a legal and official community. In 1875, it was raided by Mexican Bandits [banditos -pronounced ban DEE toes] now called the Neucestown Raid in local history. The community also had a little red school house, with 32 students at its pe

[I'm thinking this is going to be an easy meme or one very difficult one for me...I'll soon find out.' [photo is my newest witch for my collection. She's small...and sitting in a bowl!! Her body is a combination of ceramic and soft sculpture] 1. WITCH What is your favorite written work of horror fiction? I love 'em all!!! I can't just pick one. There is poetry by Poe, there are written works of horror films, classic literature....I drink 'em up like fine wine. 2. WITCH What is your favorite work of science fiction/fantasy? More difficulties for me....would the movie JAWS [the first one] be science fiction? E.T. The first ever Star Wars maybe. click either button to join List of 2009 Photo Hunt themes by the week For Photo Hunt this week, the category is "TIED" Not tide, but tied. I could probably use this photo for both....tide and tied! Right? The tide is in. hehehehe Okay, so this photo was taken on one of our weekly walks along the Marina in town and it shows that there are some old tires [not all] TIED to the pilings [or pylons] on the pier. [you can see the line used to tie them on the pylon just to the right off the pelican's right side] Now, my dear man, being a Navy dude from long ago tells me that those tires are not tires anymore...they're called 'fenders'. And of course, the rope is called a 'line'. I ask you, why don't they just call 'em as we see 'em? And the boats and yachts in the background are also TIED to their respective bollards. - - -<><><>- - - For Camera Critters... The little booger is stealing my PECANS!!! S

CLICK EITHER BUTTON to join Show n Tell [and a craft project sheet I share] The picture on my sidebar of me and my two kids [scroll down to view], I decided I was bored one day and grabbed my sketch pad and began to draw myself. Y'know, like VanGogh? Altho, I'll sustain the urge to cut off my ear thank you....So, I thought I'd share this newest pencil sketch I finished yesterday while I was waiting for Bud to return from getting the car washed and detailed... - - - ...and when I was at the Dollar Store yesterday buying some of the Halloween ghost and jack o lantern windchimes to hang on the eave of our porch outdoors, I happen to see this free project sheet that I grabbed thinking that I would share it today for those that like to do crafts for the holidays...I am thinking this would be a very inexpensive door decoration for Halloween, Autumn, or Thanksgiving. You can open this up to enlarge it to make it readable and perhaps save it and print it out for

Click either button to Join Before I begin the two memes, I just gotta tell you the huge faux pas I did yesterday. I had planned on visiting other blogs by 8 A.M....have my computer work done so I could get away from the desk and get stuff done around the house, etc. Pfffft!! What a joke on me. I took the memory card out of the camera...slid it into the card reader....hooked it up to the port at the back of the hard drive tower and began uploading/transferring the zoo photos from the camera to the computer folder for resizing so I could make a blog post. The reader told me there were 150 photos! And this was a new chip. So, that means I took 150 photos at the zoo. I think I musta kinda sorta got carried away with photographing, wouldn't you think? LOL ---Okay, so I started clicking away, got all of them chosen, and checked the box 'delete after transfer'. So, they all would be deleted off the memory card once they were saved on the computer. It was taking fore

Click either button to Join As I had mentioned last weekend, the annual event held in the month of October is the Texas Jazz Festival. Inside the program this year they devoted a couple of pages to the history of the event. Shown here from scanning my program. It all began back in 1959 where a few Del Mar College students who were members of the Jazz Club requested several musicians to come entertain the students...turning into 150 or more attending. A month later...more entertaining at the Student Union with over 350 in attendance to hear Jazz. Hence it's grown. This year, 2009, the Festival had a record breaking total in attendance. And the last five years we've gone....we've never been disappointed. It's held outdoors, at Heritage park. And luckily enough the weather was perfect. There have been rainy weekends at times, but that doesn't stop us Jazz lovers. The musicians now come from all over the state of Texas and there are three stages where a
