"I Will Take Up My Pencil....."

"...and I will go on with my drawing" ~Vincent Van Gogh

During the past couple weeks, not feeling like being online much, I sharpened my pencils...I finished another couple of pencil sketches. One of a Lazuli Bunting and the other is a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher.
Here are the two bird sketches I finished. The first shown is the bunting...

Lazuli Bunting Sketch
I recently spotted one in person and got the golden opportunity to photograph it. The images are found HERE

I do think, tho, this will be the last bird sketches I draw for a while. I need a new 'theme'. One of my favorite 'recent' movies that I've watched over and over is The Lone Ranger. And I don't sketch faces much 'cause of the challenge - I use more eraser than I do lead, lol, but I've been thinking of trying 'my hand' at sketching "Red". She's the brothel owner in the movie, and played by a favorite character actress of mine...Helena B. Carter. We'll see if I can capture her character's look sometime soon. The 2nd is the flycatcher...

Photographs I've shared of the flycatcher can be seen HERE

...walking along the marina's boardwalk I found this 'rubbish'. An old wooden window frame, a ship's rusty portal [window], a aged mooring line, and the rusted part of boat gear with chain...

HODGEPODGE

1. When I look at the sky I feel awed and gratified by the colors, the beauty, the birds flying high, and at times the vicious darkness of a storm brings fear, yet the beauty of the stars at night makes me feel small.

2. If you had to run for political office, which one would you run for? Do you have any real desire to actually do this? I've thought many times of running for a political office in the local venue. Like City Council...to get things done that NEED to be done instead of lining my pockets with kickbacks and bribes. There is crime everywhere in politics and I don't like it.

3. What scent makes you think of home? Roses....my mother's sachet.

4. How often do you take a step back to think about where you're headed in life? Do you need more or less self-reflection? Let me put it this way on a personal level: "At my age?"

5. July is National Ice Cream Month...besides a cone, what's your favorite food item to top with ice cream? Hot fudge. Or if lazy and not wanting to dirty a dish heating up the fudge, I'll drop a spoonful of Dark Chocolate Covered Raisins on top.

6. What might your autobiography be called? Would you believe the only thing I can come up with right now is "Hootin' Anni's".

7. Your least favorite mode of transportation? Why? Bus .... they're always a bit too filthy for me.

8. Insert your own random thought here ....this week in our backyard my ever-faithful epiphylum is in full bloom at night!! And the fragrance from the blossoms is so wonderfully light and airy without an overbearing sweetness. Most always it blooms one blossom at a time, this week, I counted seven buds and Sunday there were THREE opened blossoms at once...

  1. Oh my gosh those bird sketches are so incredibly vivid-looking. I love the detail in the breast feathers on the bunting. Wow.

  2. You are so talented, Anni! I hope you do decide to try your hand at sketching Red. And those beautiful flowers, your epiphylum, are wonderful. I can smell them over here... I think. :-)

  5. Good Morning, I'm in awe of your art talents. The bird sketches are fantastic. Good Luck with "Red"..... I have NO talents in that area...

I enjoyed reading your Hodgepodge answers.. I would NEVER run for political office although you are correct in saying that we need people in those offices who will work to get things done --and not be so corrupt. Drives me crazy!!!! About Ice Cream, I still love just good ole' plain vanilla the best I think --although anything with peanut butter in it has to be terrific.... ha

  8. Oh wow, Anni, congratulations on those beautiful sketches. I started [to learn only] sketching last year and haven't picked up on them again. I'll do it when I come back from our leave in SA! You inspire me, my friend! I glanced through your Hodgepodge and also have a memory of fragrance - of my mum ! Precious. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jo

  9. Anni your bird sketches are amazing!! I predict you'll find a new theme soon.
I agree with #7....thankfully I have no need for pubic transportation. I've ridden a city bus exactly 2 times in my lifetime. Very dirty. In 2005 my office moved from the main campus of N. C. State University to Centennial Campus. I often took the Wolfline (NCSU bus) when I needed to travel between campuses. I must say it was contracted but boy was it clean and efficient
    Hugs C and Madi !!

  15. You never cease to amaze me. Your talent abounds in whatever you pursue. Your sketches are so real and complimentary to the birds you choose to sketch. But, might I suggest, after you finish "Red", how about Tonto :) I can never get enough of that face. I LOL at your answer to #4. I might look back on something I wish I had done differently, but that is water under the bridge and now I am taking it one day at a time. I think I am older than you so I fully understand your answer.
Your Epiphylum is gorgeous. I have never seen them in bloom and would never try to achieve that as I am the family black thumb when it comes to house plants. So glad you are feeling well again, Hootin' Anni ... it is doublly hard to be sick in the summer. Stay well ...

  22. Number 6 is easy. " Gone Birding". You're so talented and full of ideas that I'm just tired trying to keep up Anni.

I don't think you should take up politics though, you're much too honest.

When I was a kid The Lone Ranger was one of my fave b&w programmes. Are you saying there's a new version?.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. See? I would've never thought of that title! But, now that you mention it, you and me both. Gone Birding fits us, doesn't it? The "new" Lone Ranger is a movie released a couple of years ago...no TV tho.

  39. We rode a lot of buses in Europe, and for the most part they were great. In the US they do tend to have a repuation as slightly dirty. When we'd suggest to our houseguests in the UK that they ride a bus, they often turned up their noses. Your sketches are wonderful!

  40. Your an amazing artist. That sounds like a perfect book title to me! I agree with you on the bus. I have a blog friend who is a bus driver so I didn't want to say that. The blooming blossom is so beautiful and I didn't know they were fragrant.
