Chit Chat over the fence...

  • I did another pencil sketch. Staying indoors in the middle of the day really makes me get awfully bored. I can only do so much laundry and clean just so many corners of the house...look outside and wish I could just go out there in the yard, find a shady spot and read. But the shady spots are nearly as hot as if I were in the full sun. And this week, it's been raining heavily at times so the yard is a bit soggy! So, indoors I stay. When boredom overtakes me, I read. I need a new project. For years, I've had this large panel of a cute little Halloween witch, with all intentions of trying to make a quilted coverlet. I've never in my life quilted anything before. I've been reading the 'expert' sites on how to quilt. I'm leery of even trying, but I'm thinking maybe this year I'll give it a go. But don't hold your breath...I've said "maybe this year" for several previous years. I must make a note to go to Joann Fabrics or Hancock Fabrics or even Hobby Lobby and check to see if they have any Halloween prints I can use as quilt blocks. In the meantime, I took out my smaller sketch pad and drew a bird. Yes, a bird. One of my favorite raptors. In the past my painting produced one of a heron and another finished and framed painting is of a brown pelican, and others listed in my drop down menu below the easel on my sidebar. This time...an osprey. In fact, coming across as unpatriotic I guess, I would prefer the osprey better than the nation's bird, the bald eagle. Then again, I may not be quite so 'unpatriotic' as Benjamin Franklin....didn't he propose the turkey as our national bird? I think ospreys are much prettier. Blah, blah, blah...if only I could be outside; gardening or lazing on my lawn chair with a good book in hand. Oh well. Here is the finished sketch:

  • And with the sometimes torrential rainfall the last few days, I started sketching another bird. LOL This time it's a spoonbill.

  • I learned Monday morning that Attorney General of the state of Texas will run for the governor's office since Rick Perry announced previously that he will not seek another term as our state's governor. I applaud Mr. Abbott and wish him the best outcome. He is the epitome of one who is disabled and wheel-chair bound that shows all of us that we can accomplish anything if we try and not whine from our life's mishaps and continually show negativeness along with self-pity. More power to him!! Read more...

...on the other hand there is some speculation on Ms. Davis contending in the governor's race. It promises to be a spectacle of parties this year in Texas if she does decide to make her statement of running. Time will tell.

  • Last week I mentioned trying a new cake mix of Key Lime. This week, I tellya, I have NOT felt like cooking much. I've truly been quite lazy. All I look for way too often at the store is something that is microwavable and would prefer that Bud has very little dishes to do for clean-up. Yep, I've mentioned before, if I cook, Bud cleans. And visa-versa. It's been like this since we've retired. Anyway, these days, the nutritionist would pull her hair out knowing just what the two of us have been consuming. And, in all honesty, right now...I don't care. Oh I know we'll pay for it in the long run. 'Cause processed foods are nasty and downright unhealthy. High in fat, high in sodium, and you name it. Anywho...I found this new product in the freezer aisles. We tried it one night when I didn't feel like cooking a whole meal, and Bud wanted to watch a movie uninterrupted by not having to stop and load the dishwasher and clean up the counters, etc. It's quite inexpensive...that's the first caution in my mind...cheap = unhealthy. If I look at the 'silver lining' of this nutritional value, it's probably better than sitting through a movie and eating buttered popcorn and chocolates, or eating two deep fat fried donuts with an inch of sugary chocolate icing for our dinner...right? The new item was absolutely delicious!! I always make a tossed salad with just about anything I fix. So, we had the salad, iced tea and this. The deep dish ham and cheese potato 'pot pie'. Yum. I will buy more. Sometimes, I just throw caution to the wind and indulge.

Altho I purchased the 'pies' at our local H E B grocers, I found this at the WalMart website:
    Ingredients & NUTRITION FACTS

  • And lastly, to conclude our Sunday Drive photos on the 'other side of the tracks' here in town, what we saw after we left Tule Lake and photographing the storks and spoonbills. We drove a more easterly direction, following the Nueces [pronounced new AY seas] River, behind the oil refineries and eventually coming out between the Port of Corpus Christi [the cargo ship channel and the Harbor Bridge] and where the river empties into the North Bay:

    2. I'm guilty of indulging in Marie Calendar's White Meat Chicken Pot Pie way too often....the amount of fat in the thing is enormous which is why it tastes so good, I'm sure...
I will try this ham and cheese one sometime, thanks for the rec.
I'm with you on simple meals in the summer....its too hot to cook. Tonight I'm doing a casserole with ham, veg-all, mushroom soup topped with crushed Ritz, butter and cheese. I'm serving a pineapple ring on a bed of romaine, topped with sour cream and cheddar. We also have some fresh cukes, bell pepper and beet pickles which might find their way onto the plate.

I see you're looking forward to Halloween...I'm looking forward to Football.....As for the quilt, I say go for it. I think 5" squares of different fabrics make a pretty quilt.

    3. YES YES YES!!!!! I adore pot pies, but the fat in them is sky high. BUT I clicked on your link and the fat in this pie is high, but not near as bad as some others, I cannot WAIT to try it!!! I will make a special trip to the grocery store tonight. I need stuff like this because I just can hardly cook anymore with my health. Have you ever been on that bridge? Scary...

    5. Great post, Anni. I love your drawing! I wish I could draw only half as well, I think it would be so fun to do.

The pot pie does look yummy and just once in a while (all the time) I get tired of cooking, so something like this is handy to have! On those days, I don't much care about the nutritional values. Haha!

That bridge is awesome! But scary looking, too. I just don't think they make those sides quite high enough!

    6. You are a busy lady and I like your drawings and pics. My DH loves their chicken pot pies. Will have to buy one of these for him to try, although I then feel guilty for allowing him to eat like that. Interesting about Greg Abbott. I remember when that accident happened. Wow.

    9. Well done on the sketch - you are a very talented lady :) Good luck with your quilting! I am sure you can do it if you put your mind to it. A friend of mine does quilting and she started off small - today she makes beautiful bed covers, and bags and all sorts of things! I might try my hand at it one day to :)

    23. Your sketch just blows me away. So good. You are blessed to have this talent. I can't draw a straight line. :(

We have always loved pot pies and get them about 3 times a year. Love a good salad with ours, too.

My stepdad worked for years in Aransas Pass for some kind of oil company around there. This was before he and mom married.
I remember he got a little retirement check every month from the Humble Oil co. so guess that is where he worked.

It's been very nice and cool out here on the plains for the last couple weeks. We sure have enjoyed it....:)

I'm so pi$$ed at our governor right now. He needs to call a special session to fix the school situations but he won't because he wants to please the lobbyist because money is more important than the kids, apparently.

    25. HI Annie Sweetie...
Oh what a lovely share today. Your sketch just totally takes my breath away. What a wonderful blessing you were given with that pencil in hand. You should sketch where ever you go. Even if it is just a shell on the shoreline. You are so talented sweet friend. So talented.

Love, love pot pies. I will have to check for these. I haven't seen them in our store yet, but I will check Wal Mart this weekend.

Thank you for stopping by and your precious sentiments on Bruiser. I have had a hard couple of weeks. I still keep looking for him. I keep thinking he is going to pop around a corner and surprise me. I loved having him close by and being a little boston, he snored and snorted all the time. It is the little things we miss the most.

Have a gorgeous weekend sweet friend. I so enjoyed the water. Your photos are always so awesome. I can hear the sounds and smell the fresh air.

    26. My parents have osprey that nest in their yard in Florida. They live beside a lake so the birds have plenty to eat. I love sitting on the deck and watching them but wow are they messy eaters:)
I have not seen that Banquet cheesy ham and potato yet but I will be on the lookout. It sounds so good.
Cooking has been pretty much impossible here this week too. We have been trying to eat a lot of fruit to balance all the junk we've been consuming.
I was surprised by Perry's decision. Do you think he'll run for president again?

I hope you will try quilting. It really is a lot of fun. I need to get busy and finish some I've started. Had a hard time getting in the mood to sew. We took Sunday drives often growing up.
