MONDAY MORSELS

When you read portions of my blog and I mention that Bud and I drive to the island, mainly I'm referring to Padre Island. Now, on OUR section of the island we don't have the resort areas that SOUTH Padre Island has [our area is more residential and less commercial], but it's still a continuation of the very same island. SOUTH is nearly at the Old Mexico borders...near the city of Brownsville, Texas some 160+ miles from where I live in Corpus Christi. In fact, to us locals [and others]; we tend to differentiate our portion of the same island as NORTH Padre Island. But again, it's the same island as in Brownsville, Texas. The 'great sand dunes' barrier runs the coast from Brownsville, up to Galveston, Texas. Being the LARGEST sand barrier island in the WORLD!!! As you travel the island's paved highway, you will cross a man-made channel that will take you across to MUSTANG Island. This is where Port Aransas Texas is and the ship channel that the cargo and large oil tankers follow to make it to the port of Corpus Christi in Harbor Bay and the oil refineries, customs, etc. In the 1700s it was known as Isla de Santiago and granted to Nicolás Ballí in 1759 by King Carlos III of Spain. Padre Ballí [Nicolás Ballí's grandson] requested a clear title to the property in 1827. He was the first person to have the island surveyed and was the first settler who brought families to the island. Hence, the name Padre Island. The island barrier that extends the entire coast of Texas, began forming as a submerged sand bar some 4500 years ago. The entire island ---in Texas, it's considered a roadway. For most part, you can drive on the sand with autos...the National Seashore Park is only accessible with 4 wheel drive. Padre Island alone [from Brownsville Texas to Corpus Christi] by itself is the 2nd largest island in the U.S. ----this doesn't include from Mustang Island to the Louisiana border ---According to Environmental Texas, Texas has 367 miles of coastline with 624 miles of tidewater giving a total of 991 miles. Padre Island alone, is over 1/10th of that total [209 kilometers]. If you happen to view the map above I provided, you can see from the northernmost section, Corpus Christi...then, if you travel on the map south from the city to the Gulf of Mexico, you can see the black line separating the mainland to the island...the black line is JFK causeway and the island bridge. Which is the photo I took and shared here. The photo of the bridge was taken looking BACK to the city from Mustang Island. This is the only access traveling south by vehicle to the northern islands from Corpus Christi [you can go the round about way to the same area I'm standing from Corpus Christi to Portland Texas to Aransas Pass, cross the commercial ship channel over the ferry boats to Port Aransas.

The Oscars: I love watching this annual event as I love movies. I must admit I haven't seen many this past year. We did see Inception, Wolfman, and Alice in Wonderland [nominees for movie of the year, Makeup, and costume respectively]. I never did go see one I wanted to see, The King's Speech. But, I must admit, just seeing clips of this, "The King's Speech"...I know I do want to see it on DVD, and I was VERY pleased it was Picture of the Year. The women that attend the gala is of most interest tho...the dresses. Some were downright ugly, and of course some are just knock-out stunning.

My vote for best dressed, was the elegant, and very feminine gown that Mila Kunis chose to wear [pictured here].

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY

Above the garage door there always seems to be an attraction for a certain butterfly...it's always flitting around ---

[actually, it's one Bud cut out of a large piece of particle board and I painted. Then, we attached it next to our house numbers] Anyway, the other day when I pulled in, I saw a very faint shadow and clicked my cellphone as pulling in to park.

SUNDAY'S SUMMARY

We've had a busy week. Not too much accomplished, but the days zipped by none-the-less. Three mornings last week, we had some of my favorite weather...the weather VERY early, that is. FoG!! And thick fog!! I so love this. The whole world seems to come to a stand still in the silence of it all. And of course, my first thought is getting photos. But I love to get photos of fog when I'm around water. The closest place to our home is Lakeside Park. There is a small pond that attracts ducks and geese. Then, the ocean!! That means two mornings we were driving to catch glimpses of areas ....one day on the island, the 2nd day at the pond. I'll share the photos that I got on the island today. Trouble is, the time it took us to get ready and leave, the heavy fog was lifting. The closer we got to the island, the thicker it was. But then, walking along the shore, the fog began to burn off...the sun was rising. The morning was gorgeous and very peaceful. A soft distant sound from the breaking, gentle, waves, the almost deserted beach. Few and far between a gull here and there. Their laughing calls were nearly muted by the thick air. As the sun began to peek through the heavy moisture, I spied a couple enjoying the serenity of the morning. You can see them better if you enlarge the images. Then...the sun finally broke through and the morning mist didn't linger much longer. The seagulls became more active; yet with the day's beginning the ambiance didn't change much until we finished our hour's walk. As the hours of the day progressed the humidity remained and the temperature soared to 80+. It was beautiful. The remainder of the week, we had gray-cast, humid mornings only to have the sun come out and the sky became a vivid blue and cloudless. It's Springtime in South Texas!! And I'm lovin' it!! The next foggy morning we found ourselves packing the camera and traveling down a city street only to be able to see in front of the car some 10 feet beyond. We crept along and finally finding the turnoff to head to the parking lot of the Lakeside Park and we walked around the lake; me capturing some great photos of the misty morning and the waterfowl!! I'll get those pictures resized and readied for my blog in a day or two.

On Wednesday I believe, I was finding myself driving to the plant nursery. With the warm warm temperatures in the daylight and mild nighttime temps, it's time for us to plant!! This year, I proposed to plant tomato plants!! Instead of flowers!! Can you believe that? Since there are not too many spaces to allow for the rapid growth of tomatoes, I only bought 4 plants. Heck, that is enough for just the two of us anyway. If I need more later in the season, I can always stop at the farmer's market and buy a few tomatoes and such to support our local growers!! As we prepared the boxes for the plants, I called dibs on the first tomato picked!!! All to Bud's dismay. Hey...you call dibs before the other, that's tough titties in my book!!

As I was preparing to publish this post, I just realized that in a couple of weeks it'll be Spring Break. Alas, we won't be going to the beach for our walks in the mornings while the college kids are here tearing up our beaches. I guess that's okay anyway, because it's now 'seaweed' season...and the shores are inundated with the nasty, stinking weeds. If we do go walking, we'll end up walking around where the high rise hotels are....they keep the beaches cleaned for their patrons. LOL

Sorry 'bout the poo in the powder blue!! But...

CAMERA CRITTERS

...with the camera's zoom it picks up just about anything and everything. While driving back from Padre Island this past Thursday morning ---there is a particular area on the causeway where an osprey is occasionally seen. Thursday it was perched on the street light as I rounded a curve. I pulled over and took the camera out and looked through the windshield and snapped away. So, it's a bit blurred [that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it] ---anyway it will be a bit more clear if you embiggen it. If I woulda pulled up alongside him and opened my window he would have been flying off by the time I focused.

WEEKEND FUNNIES

THIS IS TRUE!!!!
In...
Texarkana [on the border of Texas and Arkansas]
Owners of horses may not ride them at night without tail lights

In...
Houston Texas
Beer may not be purchased after midnight on a Sunday, but it may be purchased on Monday.

In...
the entire state of Texas
When two trains meet each other at a railroad crossing, each shall come to a full stop, and neither shall proceed until the other has gone.

You know you're in Texas, on a hot summer day, when...
You see two trees fighting over a dog.

When IN Texas visiting us...
DO NOT try to tell us how to Bar-B-Q. This could lead to permanent expulsion and revocation of your work visa. Consider yourself just damn lucky that we let you come down here in the first place. Don't push your luck!

...last but not least, this is a serious privacy offense in my opinion. Did you know that each and every driver in the U.S. that has been issued a driver's license in their state can be viewed by ANYone with computer access?!!! You know how I am about privacy issues. This scares the heck outta me. If you click on this link url I've provided you can type in your name and state, the site will search and then you [or anyone] can then see your personal stats [height, weight, birthday and photo ID, etc.] Once it's loaded you can click the option to disable it from being viewed by others! I immediately went and searched for me, it came up but with all those using this site, it may be slow and there is another link to use which I clicked on and it came up a lot quicker that way, and I opted out. Privacy issues these days are few and far between.

Here is the link: THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!

PS:
Shadow has commented that my blog's background went 'belly up' on the server and all she could see was frogs with the domain registration disabled. So, I moved my images and redid it a bit. Hope that helped!!

Great Balls of Fire!! It's RHETT!!....

A couple weeks ago I had mentioned that Bud also gave me another gift being that Valentine's Day and my birthday are so close together in February. Well, I showed you the heart necklace that he went back to get and I said I'd show you the other gift. He had found a pair of water glasses with GWTW theme! I was thrilled. [also shown here - the last photo - are some of my GWTW 'treasures']

I thought love was only true in fairy tales.

Meant for someone else but not for me.
Love was out to get me; that's the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw her face,

Now I'm a believer.
Without a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer, I couldn't leave her if I tried.

I thought love was more or less a given thing.
It seems the more I gave the less I got.
What's the use of trying; all you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine...

I got rain!

Then I saw her face

Now I'm a believer.
Without a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer, I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Love was out to get me.
That's the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams...

Then I saw her face.

Now I'm a believer.
Without a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer, I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Last week, on Thursday to be exact, the surf was a bit wild. Just a bit. Nothing compared to the summer waves when a storm is out in the Gulf, but it was still filled with some torrent of motion. While walking out on the jetty by the boat canal, I tried to focus on one boulder [the boulder is about the size of a semi-truck cab] so I could show you the action---

---

Oh, and when we walked to the very end of the jetty that juts out to sea, there was some action of swimmers also [photo isn't too clear; it's VERY difficult to time the shutter with them coming for air, and knowing just WHERE they'll come up at any particular time!!] We saw about 10 dolphins and a couple of those ten were calves [baby dolphins] --the black 'dot' behind the larger dolphin is one of the babies, and the larger, of course, is the momma...

Mommas, yep, but I didn't see any Papas!!!

Yesterday, we went driving around the Mustang Island, bird watching. We, of course, ended up around Port A [Port Aransas] and Aransas Pass [the area with the vehicle ferry boats to transport us over the ship's channel]. Anyway....we got to a favorite bird watching spot for us, the Paradise Ponds. Tho the vegetation was yet quite a bit into winter kill, it was still a fantastic hour we spent there----there was quite a lot of heron activity yesterday. ONE was busy collecting tree branches [yes, BRANCHES] for nest building., while others were either foraging for foods or nesting already, high in the trees. Tho the nest of the one heron that was building, was clear on the other side of the tree line [invisible to us on the pond side]...she did come down and back out into the open to collect branches. I think I happened to get some incredible photos of her. This one photo on the right, in particular, just doesn't do justice to the photos I captured during our stay there. And since they're so much better than this one, I published them all on my photo blog...COLORS OF THE WIND. The photos are so clear, and so vivid with color [with this photo, the 'ruby' is part of her beak], I know it's worth a click of your mouse to stop by. Take a look; I don't think you'll be disappointed. We stopped here with all intent on scouting for birds, but the ponds were also very active with turtles too. I even captured a little turtle porn that I'll share soon. So much going on there yesterday it was a very pleasant outing, we ended up at the golf resort beach and walked quite a long distance, and next went to the bird reserve.......except for when we had to wait for nearly 1/2 hour for the ferry to carry us across I didn't care for that...bad timing on our part!!---the ships have the right of way, and we had to wait, with our cars idling 'til the tankers got through first! Oh, and while some of you are still being hit with snow storms...it was 80 degrees down here...and a wonderful, wonderful sea breeze!! A perfect day. This link that follows in bold text will direct you to the busy momma bird!!! It will open in a new window/tab. GREAT BLUE HERON NEST BUILDING.

HELP! Anyone know this ...is it coral?

MACRO MONDAY

On the beach, I think I found a piece of coral. And researching the species of corals online...I am not totally sure---if anyone KNOWS the kind it is, please let me in on it!! Anyway, the macros are truly MACRO because of the fact it is a SMALL piece... I can hold the tiny piece in my fingers. As you'll see below. Okay, so the closest I could come to by reading different sites is that it's either coral OR anemones. LOL I also read that there are indeed coral beds in the Gulf, around Texas...near Galveston. Perhaps, in my imagination, this got washed a couple hundred miles along the sea to Corpus? Did it come from Galveston? Probably not, since the currents don't come in my direction from Galveston, Texas...this is no doubt from the Old Mexico peninsula or maybe around Monterey?

MONDAY MORSELS

Oh, and for my next trick!-------you see by viewing with me through my car's rear view mirror that the surf is creepin' up on our car!! When we I parked on the beach....I parked facing the beach's access road. There are some days that the sand from the high tide the night before has washed in and it's really really soft. Especially if the beach hasn't been grated by the city crews yet. One could get stuck in it as easily as you can a snow drift! Trust me, I've seen so many [especially those with 4 wheel drive vehicles] gallivanting and showing off with their driving skills, only to get stuck in the soft sand and having to get out and dig out of the mess they got themselves into because the more they try and spin and rev up to get out, the deeper down in the soft sand their vehicle goes!! In fact, I have seen several having to call the emergency beach vehicles to help PULL them out. And rumor has it stated that that mistake of yours costs up to $300 for their help!!! Anyway, I usually park facing the 'exit' when I'm driving so to make a quick getaway. LOL But, this time, it was kinda an eye opening experience.....you see, me thinks I parked a bit too close to the surf. Well, not at the beginning of our adventure that day....but by the time we got back to the car, she was having her back feet wet as the tide came in and out. Poor thing. I tellya, if we had walked more than an hour this fine day, we'd had come back to seeing our car floating out in the Gulf waters!!! Trust me, we high tailed it outta there in no time flat. I know I learned my lesson...just 'cause it was low tide upon arrival, doesn't mean it'll stay low tide forever. FROM NOW OWN...PARK CLOSER TO THE DUNES ANNI!!! Oh, and yes, in case you're curious----I got my a$$ chewed on a bit from Bud...he thought I was stupid. I wouldn't admit tho, that he was right this time. Of course...you don't think I'd actually come out and say he was right, do you?
