For today...my 'costume choice' is.........

SUNDAY'S SUMMARY

This year, for some reason [maybe it's because I have so many now the way it is], I did not find any new and worthy of bringing home witches for my collection. The cloth one Bud found for me, and the little ceramic one is from my sister in Colorado. That's it for this season. And that's quite all right by me. As much as I love 'em and how fun they are sitting out and making the home all creepy and crawly with creatures and sound...they all have to be packed away each and every year. Right? So the less I buy/receive, the less of a job I have come November 1st. Tomorrow I plan on tearing everything down and begin cleaning and dusting and then I'll begin putting the small amount of Thanksgiving knick-knacks out that I have. Once that is over, then, it's Christmas Santas that'll keep me occupied for a week or two. As much as I love the holidays, and as much as I love decorating, I WILL be glad when it's over this year. I think a lot has to do with all the other stuff that'll be going on in November and December. I have the cold I'm still fighting with, then I have several doctor's appointments scheduled in November. It's decorating and baking and cooking and cleaning that I think will slow me down this year. The week past has been nothing but a T B-like ward here within the compounds of our 'prison of a home'...I say prison, because we've been locked in for days it seems. I don't like not being able to get up and go out when I want. Yet, I don't like to spread the cold and flu germs either!! I just wish others felt the same way and stay home when they know they're contagious. It just doesn't seem right. I did have to go out to the Pharmacy and pick up a refill of my heart meds, and I tellya, that was an effort. I knew I'd collapse by the time I got back to the car, so I used the convenience of the drive thru this time [no tiring getting out and walking to the back of the store...AND no spreading of the germs as much]. Bud didn't go with me either....he was home in bed with the creepin' crud too!!!

Before we contracted the cold, we did go walking along the Park...this is on the North side of Corpus Christi, beyond the Corpus Christi Bay, and Harbor Bridge, and causeway. Looking across the bay, you can see the city's skyline [which I share a photo]. Again, this is a 'selected' place to go birding. We saw a few, but I was amazed at the oyster beds!! Tons and tons of oyster shells...everywhere you look! There were some beauties. Bud collected a few of the flat ones, while I preferred just looking at the oyster clumps. They are so artful in how they grow together. A wonderful place to visit and spend a few minutes there in solitude. Altho the very same evening after we walked the area, the local news reported someone getting bit by a rattlesnake! Ewwww....that put the hipper dipper to my enthusiasm!!! I posted some birding photos on my photo blog....HERE and HERE. And I have several more photos that I'll share at another time.

After posting this post, I will be taking a few days' break from bloggin' since I'll have tons of Halloween stuff to clean off and then pack away 'til next year. It usually takes two or three days. I'm not sure I'll even be in costume this year since the nasty cough refuses to leave my system. But if I do get a bug up my pants and decide to dress in my costume of choice this year...I will have Bud take a picture.

HAVE A SAFE HALLOWEEN if you celebrate.

WEEKEND FUNNIES

This is a long story...Erik forwarded this to me through an email, and it was too funny not to share today---

I called my friend Andy Sable, a gastroenterologist, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy. A few days later, in his office, Andy showed me a color diagram of the colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one point passing briefly through Minneapolis. Then Andy explained the colonoscopy procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring and patient manner. I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really hear anything he said, because my brain was shrieking, 'HE'S GOING TO STICK A TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!' I left Andy's office with some written instructions, and a prescription for a product called 'MoviPrep,' which comes in a box large enough to hold a microwave oven. I will discuss MoviPrep in detail later; for now suffice it to say that we must never allow it to fall into the hands of America 's enemies. I spent the next several days productively sitting around being nervous. Then, on the day before my colonoscopy, I began my preparation. In accordance with my instructions, I didn't eat any solid food that day; all I had was chicken broth, which is basically water, only with less flavor. Then, in the evening, I took the MoviPrep. You mix two packets of powder together in a one-liter plastic jug, then you fill it with lukewarm water. (For those unfamiliar with the metric system, a liter is about 32 gallons). Then you have to drink the whole jug. This takes about an hour, because MoviPrep tastes - and here I am being kind - like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon. The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody with a great sense of humor, state that after you drink it, 'a loose, watery bowel movement may result.' This is kind of like saying that after you jump off your roof, you may experience contact with the ground. MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here, but, have you ever seen a space-shuttle launch? This is pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle. There are times when you wish the commode had a seat belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet. After an action-packed evening, I finally got to sleep. The next morning my wife drove me to the clinic. I was very nervous. Not only was I worried about the procedure, but I had been experiencing occasional return bouts of MoviPrep spurtage. I was thinking, 'What if I spurt on Andy?' How do you apologize to a friend for something like that? Flowers would not be enough. At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging that I understood and totally agreed with whatever the heck the forms said. Then they led me to a room full of other colonoscopy people, where I went inside a little curtained space and took off my clothes and put on one of those hospital garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that, when you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than when you are actually naked. Then a nurse named Eddie put a little needle in a vein in my left hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted, but Eddie was very good, and I was already lying down. Eddie also told me that some people put vodka in their MoviPrep. At first I was ticked off that I hadn't thought of this, but then I pondered what would happen if you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the bathroom, so you were staggering around in full Fire Hose Mode. You would have no choice but to burn your house. When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled me into the procedure room, where Andy was waiting with a nurse and an anesthesiologist. I did not see the 17,000-foot tube, but I knew Andy had it hidden around there somewhere. I was seriously nervous at this point. Andy had me roll over on my left side, and the anesthesiologist began hooking something up to the needle in my hand. There was music playing in the room, and I realized that the song was 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA. I remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that could be playing during this particular procedure, 'Dancing Queen' had to be the least appropriate. 'You want me to turn it up?' said Andy, from somewhere behind me. 'Ha ha,' I said. And then it was time, the moment I had been dreading for more than a decade. If you are squeamish, prepare yourself, because I am going to tell you, in explicit detail, exactly what it was like. I have no idea. Really!! I slept through it. One moment, ABBA was yelling 'Dancing Queen, feel the beat of the tambourine,' and the next moment, I was back in the other room, waking up in a very mellow mood. Andy was looking down at me and asking me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even more excellent when Andy told me that It was all over, and that my colon had passed with flying colors. I have never been prouder of an internal organ.

On the subject of Colonoscopies:
Colonoscopies are no joke, but these comments during the exam were quite humorous. A physician claimed that the following are actual comments made by his patients (predominately male) while he was performing their colonoscopies:

1. 'Take it easy, Doc. You're boldly going where no man has gone
before!'

2. 'Find Amelia Earhart yet?'

3. 'Can you hear me NOW?'

4. 'Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?'

5. 'You know, in Arkansas , we're now legally married.'

6. 'Any sign of the trapped miners, Chief?'

7. 'You put your left hand in, you take your left hand out...'

8. 'Hey! Now I know how a Muppet feels!

9. 'If your hand doesn't fit, you must quit!'

10. 'Hey Doc, let me know if you find my dignity.'

11. 'You used to be an executive at Enron, didn't you?'

And the best one of all:

12. 'Could you write a note for my wife saying that my head is not
up there?'

This past week, out of boredom, I began a new sketch on my watercolor tablet in hopes of painting her soon. Well, I started painting on it nearly as quickly as I finished the sketch. Of course, I won't have it completed for this Halloween 'cause it came to a stop because of the cold I caught, and there is a lot to be done and then detailing afterward, but it'll get done and then I have a whole year to get it matted and framed for NEXT season.......

THURSDAY THUNKS

Today's questions are brought to you by the color purple, witches' brooms, the number 800-555-1000, and hootin' anni.

1] We all love snuggly things, right? In your own words, explain how the "X" and "O" became symbols for kisses and hugs! For me, the x is kinda like what you see around Valentine's day...the image of a heart when two kiss-------hence the x is two pairs of lips 'kissing'. Now the o for hugs...to me, would be that you have to get your arms around a certain person or object...hence the o is a hug.

2] Besides eliminating sticks, what would you put in a non-stick pan? Have you ever wondered how 'they' achieved having teflon adhere to the pan when it's non-stick? Okay, right now, I'd go for some eggs and sausage!!

3] x=y over pi squared. What are your thoughts on crematoriums having discounts on those that die in fires? Absolutely, even in the afterlife a bargain is a bargain!!

4] Tongue twisters are fun...but, it's torture to try to say lisp with that "s" in the word. What is your favorite tongue twister? Risque answers get extra credit! Not necessarily 'risque' [remember, I grew up with three older brothers!]....but perhaps rude or crude maybe?======
Mrs Puggy Wuggy has a square cut punt.
    Not a punt cut square,
    Just a square cut punt.
It's round in the stern and blunt in the front.
Mrs Puggy Wuggy has a square cut punt.

5] Cold weather is coming up. If it's zero degrees Fahrenheit, and tomorrow night it's predicted to be twice as cold, what temperature will it be? As Bud would say..."Colder that a priest's penis". But that doesn't fit in these days now does it? They're not so cold afterall!!! So, if y'all go out in the cold, make sure you bring your nut-tens!!

6] Your significant other is upset with you, would you rather be skating on thin ice or be in hot water? Why? Hot water, I could take advantage of that situation simply by adding a bit of bubble bath to the scenery. Calgon take me away.

7] What's worse, expecting the unexpected or being a wise guy? I think 'wise guy'...only 'cause you'd be expecting the not so unexpected...correct?

8] What brand of vacuum cleaner sucks the best? Mine really sucks!!! I ride around on mine this time of year!!! More powerful than a locomotive!! Able to leap tall buildings!!

9] How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire? Do you like playing with fire? Depends on the fire....makes me think of Billy Joel's "We didn't start the fire".

10] Toys R us...what was your favorite toy? My souped up positraction 409...go granny go granny, GO!

11] Halloween is near...let's go grave robbing....what would you like to find? An emerald the size of my fist would be nice, but seriously, I hope to find DEAD people...not live ones.

12] Do you wake up or open your eyes first? I think I'm half awake before my eyes partially open...

13] What mask would you wear to a Halloween Party? Something scary. Sarah Palin? Actually, I'm gonna go 'cutesy' this year....you'll see.

Well, Wednesday the day was really stressful for me....a hacking cough and lack of sleep. I don't think I slept a good solid hour total on Tuesday evening. Perhaps 'cause I went to bed right after NCIS---too early. But I was drained. Wednesday I tried to nap, but sleep just wouldn't come to me. Bud cooked some chicken in the crock pot and made some chicken noodle soup from it. And, taking double doses of vitamin C, I hope this cold/flu goes away soon!!! Thanks for the well wishes. I'm gonna try again right now...to get some much needed sleep.

Port Aransas, Texas

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, while out and about along the Texas Coast, we stopped along the Port of Aransas because I had read that you can get a good view of the lighthouse from the ships' channel. The lighthouse is no longer used for navigational purposes, and it's now privately owned. The only way of seeing it would be from the banks of the channel in one certain spot, or charter a tour boat that will take you along the shores of a smaller water passage way to the property. We purposely made a special stop here for the second time in two weeks because the first time I did not have the more powerful lensed camera where I could zoom in on it better. From where you stand on the banks...it's a long distance away....you need a powerful zoom lens to get a good photo. If you take the charter boat, you can only photograph it from the tour boat as it is not open to the public...the land or the lighthouse. The majority of Texas’ 400-mile-long coastline is protected by a necklace of barrier islands and peninsulas, broken only by a few openings or passes, which provide access to protected bays and harbors. Aransas Pass is one such gap, located between Saint Joseph Island to the north and Mustang Island to the south. The pass leads to the port of Corpus Christi, located twenty miles or so to the west.

FOR a lengthy HISTORY OF THE LIGHTHOUSE, read more here

While there....a beautiful scene took place...a ship emerged out of the watery mists; slowly making its way through the channel to Corpus Christi Bay many hours yet to go [they have to move very slowly through the channels]....while a couple of beach combers stopped to watch along the bank, I stood by and felt like yelling out "Mark Twain" as I helped guide the ship through. LOL....

Tuesday morning, I woke up with a sore, scratchy throat and as the day progressed, it turned for the worse....now there is a nasty, dry hacking cough to go with the discomfort in the throat, so I'm gonna post this early as I may not feel like being online in the 'morrow!! October 27th, would he still be with us, my father would be celebrating his 98th birthday. Also, it's NAVY DAY!!!

HURRICANE RICHARD update:
[now a tropical depression]
"According to Warning Coordination Meteorologist John Metz in Corpus Christi, the storm is forecast to cross over land and return to water at the Bay of Campeche on Tuesday as a tropical depression. Metz said most forecast models indicate that the storm will be hit with a strong southwesterly wind shear once it moves into the Gulf of Mexico, which should keep the storm from reorganizing. The chance of rain in South Texas Thursday or Friday will depend on a cold front that is expected to arrive in the area Thursday. If it does, Metz says the area should remain dry. If the front doesn't arrive until later, there is a chance of heavy rainfall for South Texas. More likely, according to Metz, the rainfall will miss South Texas and move into northeast Mexico."

----ya, and two years ago, the meteorologists said that Hurricane Ike [Sept. 2008] would hit land at a category one also [and it hit the Houston area as a category five?!!] I'll believe this article update by the weekend. Then, I'll be satisfied...one way or another. Altho, wading these past few weeks in the Gulf waters, the water temperature has dropped considerably...that's always a good deterrent for STRONG hurricanes as they thrive in warm water. So, my uneducated guess will be that he peters out mid Gulf...the water is just too cold for him to survive.

Silence!!

Monday Morsels

Yesterday in my Sunday's Summary section, I was 'talking' about my future book reads....ironic. So, I got an email from Jeff Dunham [I signed up for and requested to be notified if he'd return to Corpus Christi with another comedy show]. He stated, or advertised, his upcoming new autobiography that is going to be on the shelves the first week of November of this year. Bud? Are you listening to me? Ahem....a Christmas gift under the tree for me? *hint* Anyway, there was a link with a couple of excerpts from his new book. I don't think it'll hurt any, or infringe on copyright issues if I share. It IS helping promote sales for him, right? I love the guy's performances to almost being a fanatic. Especially with Achmed and Peanut!! The book is called "All By My Selves". In case you didn't know, Jeff is a ventriloquist. And his shows are super funny. Not to mention, Bud has a little bit of Walter in him. It will definitely be one to read. I highly anticipate it....hope it's as good as his Comedy Central, and his live shows! If not, I'll be sorely disappointed.

Sunday's Summary

Nuttin' Honey!!!
From Monday of this past week, it was a bit boring. Nothing was crucial in getting done. Mostly watching a new storm developing below the island of Cuba and becoming stationary for some time. Predictions are it {named storm, Richard} will be heading into the Gulf waters soon. The path is still a bit 'unknown'...I guess it depends on pressure areas and temperatures. There will be a chance it heads to the Texas coast, but for now, a slim chance of it being a STRONG storm...

Bud and I had planned on going to the opening of the new Matt Damon movie, "Hereafter". But, after reading the professional critics' critiques and the movie goers reviews, we changed our minds...I understand there are a lot of subtitles and such...I personally don't want to READ a movie!! LOL And of course, our walks along the beaches. We stopped at a new section. Well, new to us anyway. We've never pulled off the freeway to stop at this particular area near Nueces Bay ---the park is AT sea level and floods easily. Each and every time we've driven by the park, it was always a bit 'under water' from storms. It's not worth getting the car stuck in the mire and pay for a towing job. Since it's been dryer these past few weeks, we decided to go by and see if it was 'safe' to drive into the area.

The book I've been reading [and finished] was really good. It really wasn't a crumby book from the beginning, but slow to begin. After the queen was beheaded, I didn't want to put it down. How I love to read about this era. In fiction of course. And this author, tho I've not read any previous writings of hers, is just simply super. With this particular novel, she has written it in first person, which is the best for me anyway...it's like sitting at the hearth on a cold wintry night and the person is regaling to me a life experience. And in Old English style...her chapters are even marked....Chapter the First, Chapter the Eleventh and so on....unique. Heck, it doesn't take all that much to please me. LOL The book is "The Queens Governess"...it begins with Anne Boleyn and her lady...and the lady is now the governess of the daughter, Elizabeth, the Queen. Wonderful. I highly recommend it for those who like England's historical novels. I'm trying to decide which book to begin reading now...I have three I'd really like to start reading. Two books, one, a long time hunted for book that I found in Books, Ink. over in Portland a couple of weeks ago, when we drove over to attend the Fall Festival...on the way back home, we stopped at a little 'corner' bookstore of used books...and I found it. My mother in law highly recommended it years and years ago...and I FOUND a copy and bought it!!! The Silver Chalice---since it's so very old [first printed in the early 1950's] it's out of print of course, the only way to have found it is to look in used book stores ---I did see a copy of it quite a while ago at Abe Books [online book finders], but never ordered it. The 2nd of the two books I found there was a novel on Lizzie Borden [the infamous 'ax girl'] which is entitled "Lizzie". The third book is one I found at Half Price books the other day is Archie and Amélie. Of course they're all novels of historical value, The Silver Chalice is about a silversmith commissioned to produce a silver holder for the 'holy grail'...while Lizzie is a novelized version of Lizzie Borden and her lifestyle; the third one is a novel of the Astor Family, the rich, filled with scandals--love, marriage, drugs, with a bit of his psychiatric tendencies and time spent in an asylum....

We did attend the 50th annual Jazz Festival over the past weekend. But the time there was cut short because of the daytime ballgame. Heritage Park and the City of Corpus Christi each year holds a terrific festival of many many nation-wide jazz bands attending for the festival held over three days. There are three different bandstands within the park along with food, historic homes to tour, craft booths and drinks!! All three days, the times are from noon 'til the wee hours of the morning. Each band has a time slot to perform, usually about 45 minutes. Some with encores.

This one band in particular was local, and as Bud and I toured the grounds, their music was superb, so we stopped and enjoyed the ambiance their talents poured out. So many 'jazz' bands are NOT jazz to me, but either modern jazz [more of a rock genre] or BLUES. To me, Blues is not JAZZ. This band [the three top photos] were the good 'old time jazz'!! The older gentlemen performing for us were playing the oldies but goodies...at the time of the photo shoot...they were playing "I Love You for Sentimental Reasons" with a fabulous 'jazzy' rhythm...quite good...I used to love listening to Nat King Cole sing this very song! While the last photo taken at another bandstand was more blues....we didn't hang around much longer after that. And the third bandstand was more Latin rhythm jazz...this other one we walked over to see, the program was nothing exciting...In the past, I've found that the 'best bands' are playing at night when the crowds are much larger. And there is something quite special when the lights are strung from tree to tree, around the bandstands, and through the grassy areas of the park...it just has an old tyme atmosphere of the days past. Quite fun and the demeanor of the attendees are more relaxed and enjoying the surroundings.

Well, the Texas Rangers Won the AL pennant!! I was so excited. Either team in the playoffs for the American League winning would have pleased me. Tho the Yankees lost, and deservedly so since they played like Little League to me....the Rangers are IN!! The first time for a long time that a Texas team has gone this far....wow. The way they played the past couple of weeks, I think they have a biting chance of taking the Fall Classic Trophy. Exciting.

This year, a new location, and a vast amount of fun along with animations, costumes galore, special effects, and gothic jewelry, pumpkins,...........everything Halloween!!! With the cellphone, I took some photos so you can come in and view with us. The very LAST image shared in the video is my CAMERA CRITTER entry....

WARNING: 1st two jokes ---Gross!!

There were these 3 vampires. The first vampire walks into a bar and says, "Bartender, give me a shot of blood and vodka." The bartender gives him the shot of blood and vodka. The vampire drinks it, and leaves. The second vampire walks into the bar and says, "Bartender, give me a shot of blood and vodka." The bartender gives him the shot of blood and vodka. The vampire drinks it, and leaves. The third vampire walks into the bar and says, "Bartender, give me a mug of hot water." The bartender gives him a surprised look, "Why do you want a mug of hot water?" The vampire pulls out a dirty tampon and says, "It's tea time."
