NOTE: This is a prescheduled post. After the Monday's 5 pm EDT reading of the Tropical Storm Alex update, there is a 99% chance TS Alex'll be a hurricane by morning while I'm still asleep. If the predicted path is anywhere correct, there is a slight possibility that Alex will turn northeast...it's all a guessing game right now but Bud and I will prepare our home and our stash of food and water most of the day tomorrow and be ready for the high winds and rain. The weather channel at 2 pm Monday afternoon warned the entire USA coastal areas that there will be rains...and heavy rains. It shows to be one HUGE system. Likely there will be flooding in town, even if he doesn't dance himself into our city. We are expected to have HIGH surf and lots of wind from this. Perhaps remnants if it turns westerly toward Old Mexico or hits just south of us; the Brownsville Texas area. He's not to make landfall until mid week [if he turns toward Old Mexico] or by the week's end [if he decides to go toward the Texas coast]. All that considering, I may be without power for days. I think we'll be okay, I don't think he'll get to be a category five like Katrina...but y'never know. We WILL keep watching and listening to all the warnings and watches. If any of you ARE in his path....stay safe and evacuate if need be. If I am not online...you will know that we lost power and/or cable.

I must admit, ever since I was knee high to a grasshopper, I have loved home grown tomatoes! This time of year, I crave 'em. As a child I used to climb from the floor to the kitchen counter, using the cupboard drawers for a ladder, reaching beyond my reach for the salt shaker! I'd grab it, sit it down, climb down from where I was, and put the shaker in my hand and off I'd run to the tomato patch. Now, it wasn't a tomato 'patch'...the area my father had was probably more than an acre. All covered with tomatoes. My mom and dad would pick the ripened tomatoes daily from about July 1st through until it froze for the winter. But, I...I didn't really like the really ripe, red ones. My preference as a kid, and still as an adult, were the kind of tomatoes ripening to a crimson red on the bottom and still a tinge of green at the top where the stem came. They're much more flavorful for me. A bit on the sweet, but yet not overbearingly sweet. A bit of crispness. And the juices would flow from my nose over my chin and onto my dress....from the first bite to the last dollop I tossed in my awaiting mouth. And then, I would pick another. Never washing them off...just right directly from the plant. If someone in the house was wanting me, they'd always know where to look. Yep, I was out there in my tomato haven. Sitting on the dirt, savoring every bite. I've probably consumed more fresh tomatoes in my life than Del Monte could shake a stick at.

That was Nebraska.

When my father got an offer because of his occupation's expertise [yes, he was known across the state and into neighboring states because he was that good at his work]...in Colorado. At the age of not quite 6 for me, we relocated to Northern Colorado. And of course, my parents needed lots of land...for gardening. As always, we had tomato plants in by June 1st each and every year...sometimes only to have them freeze in a late Spring frost. But the man prevailed...he'd replant. The growing season isn't as long in Colorado as it was in Nebraska. But during the summer we had fresh, the most luscious, tomatoes each and every meal. I never tired of them. We even carried a salt shaker for me in the car and took a bag of them up in the mountains when we'd go hiking or picnicking...so when I got bored, I'd open the zip lock bag and munch away. You could always tell where I sat in the car or truck...tomato seeds on the backs of the front seats on the floor mats, or up on the dash board if I were sitting up front. That was me. I am still the subject of family get togethers when the talk is home grown tomatoes.

Now, in Texas, the growing season to plant them is usually mid March. Through September. A lot more months of nurturing the fragile plants...and watching them grow and thinking of my dad and his love of gardening. These days, instead of a salt shaker in the car, it's salt packets I steal take with me. And to show you the colossal size of the tomatoes this past weekend picked, the little 'shell' salt shaker is about the size of a U.S. quarter.

Tomatoes are an excellent wrinkle prevention food because they contain lycopene, a substance that also decreases the risk of developing cancer.

A DOUBLE DOSE OF Monday Morsels...

So, it's a good thing that they continue with this and make us viewers realize that the #2 hurting now or later is actually heartburn. There for a minute, after the first few words were spoken, "Hi. Number 2 please." "Would you like that to hurt now or later?" I thought it was going to be a commercial for EXLAX™!!!

This past week, I read that a young guy was fired from his stint as a mascot for an MLB franchise because he wrote something derogatory [really, it wasn't] on his Facebook page. What gives? Are we not supposed to have Freedom of Speech these days now? It's against the laws of huge franchises to take word of mouth [in this case Facebook] that shows discontent with something within the establishment, and layoff that person, isn't it unlawful? I don't get it, I just don't get it!! To answer my own question, no it isn't unlawful. But these days, it seems that a right is taken away from us. Too many. I'm sure in the laws standard that something so very vile [of which I don't think this guy's statement was even close!] could be construed as slander in any courtroom, but this firing is going a bit too far if you ask me.

Besides, once again, are we not allowed to voice our opinions on any given circumstance without volition or any physical harm? It's not okay--no harm, no foul? Which brings me to state my thoughts then, with a certain baseball team I follow. It has to do with one of the professional teams. I ask: "Just why are you all hanging on to the 2010 manager?" He seems very aloof in the dugout....always standing alone and without emotion of any kind. I know one is not supposed to base an opinion on looks alone, but this guy reminds me of a snake....slithery, evil and without a doubt would put venom in your veins if you'd look at him funny, and not even bat an eye. Snake-like? Yessiree. He rarely comes out of his hidey-hole to do much of anything...the team is too often losing to some of the lowest ranking teams around. The standings are in the gutter! He keeps the pitchers out there until it's too late. He makes the wrong choices in my opinion. Where is the owner in all this? Why isn't there anything being done to remedy the team's seasonal failures. Even the star starting pitcher has requested that his no-trade contract be waived so he can move on....and the all time player on first base too, has a no-trade clause in his contract and the news tells us fans that he also wants out! This should tell the owner something. The fans are disappointed. At least the majority. There are still some die-hards out there in the stands; there always will be. Even the area of the stadium where you have season ticket holders is quite empty lately.

Something should be done...someone should be fired, and I think they should begin by getting rid of the team's manager ---then, the pitching coach and probably the batting coach while they're at it ---new players come to the team with a great standing, pitchers AND batters...a couple of months with the coaches/manager and voila....bad news, ERAs gone down, batting averages go down; you name it. Thinking back to when the rookie, from the farm team, was placed on the professional roster...he was great; hitting home runs like a crazy guy...filled with such exuberance and team spirit! Then, the following Spring, he had his first Spring Training camp attendance and he changed. Not really for the worse, but still not as good as his rookie season. Then, the closer from long ago, he sucked swamp water!! Always losing the game for the team. After having a winning score, he'd come in and allow the opposing team too many hits and runs. HE was traded and he then performed for the other team greatly. It says something about the coaches for the team of which I follow here, don't you think? The owners need to fire 'em all now before the franchise goes belly up. You're losing money. You're losing fans. You're even losing the loyalty of the league itself when your best players request a trade. Now, if my voicing my opinion on my blog is not Freedom of Speech.........

But, in all reality, going back to the young man being fired by the 'other major league team' for what he said on his FB wall, your boss has every right, or so I'm told...regarding blog posts/Facebook pages. That's a shame because with this one particular article, I don't see anything wrong with what he said other than stating an opinionated fact.

PS...I'm really glad to see that TS Alex over the Yucatan is predicted to go westerly now!!! Not for Old Mexico, but for the state of Texas and the Gulf...the oil spill disaster! The way the chart shows this morning, perhaps we'll get some large wave action by him tho. Again, it just depends on where it touches land after it leaves the peninsula. And I'm still bummed over the World Cup Round 16 where USA lost. Oh well...always next year I guess.

it's a jungle out there....well, a jungle book author to be sure---

I'll take you heading NORTHwest for 100, Alex----

I figured this little booger would be the first of the Gulf Season. And yes, Alex may be heading our way. The white area shows the probable predicted path he'll take. But, hopefully by Tuesday of next week, he'll make a turn west instead of north as this graph indicated. He's gonna take some watching....hopefully, it'll remain a category 1 if he turns into a hurricane....right now he's a tropical storm, but with wind sheer high enough to be named. Looks like Brownsville and Corpus Christi will perhaps be a target for now...just bears watching. ---- My 6 word Saturday and Camera Critters is just below---SCROLL DOWN.

My six words....

TRUTH ISN'T ALWAYS WHAT YOU SEE!

The reason I chose these six words is for the fact I read one of Rudyard Kipling's short stories last night. You see, while Bud and I were out walking, I said to him, what we need is a rickshaw and runner to get us back to the car where we would have the open air and a bit of breeze on us created by the rickshaw gentle movement along the street...it was so humid to walk. Anyway, that, in turn, got Bud'a talkin'!! About Junior High School believe it or not...many moons ago for the both of us. It's funny how a certain word or subject stirs up a memory. Well, to continue with my thought...in Jr. High Bud told me they had to read Kipling's story. The short story is entitled "The Phantom Rickshaw". I wanted to read it...all the books by him that I have didn't have this in it. We drove to the used book store in town, and I searched the hardback books...nothing. In desperation, I went over to the fiction paperbacks. Now, I'd prefer hardback books only 'cause the print is so small in the teeny tiny paperback books. Lo and behold I found one....Got it home and read it last night. Thing is, during reading it in its entirety before shutting the light off for some sleep...I kept noticing that Kipling continued throughout the story having the word rickshaw with an apostrophe in front of the 'r'.....'rickshaw. I always assumed that the word itself was actually a word. But, in doing some research this morning...the word is derived from the Orient, contaminated by the English language. It's actually JINRIKISHA....a Japanese word for the same as what we Americans would say it was. So, goes to show you, sometimes, what we see [and speak] is not always true!!! By the way, the story is pretty good. Less than an hour's read. Typical Kipling's work. Oh, and on another thought, my favorite Kipling work is Riki Tiki Tavi. Love that story!!!!

SHOW N TELL

Just showing off the flowers of this month in full bloom. Oh, and Dawn? I have another beautiful iris to show again. And there is another one budding! By the way, my dad had iris blooming all Spring and into the Summer months. When he planted them, he would plant just a partial amount, then, wait two weeks, and plant more. This way, they wouldn't all bloom at once. They're beautiful; all thanks to you and your generous gift....

The very last photo is of a newer crepe myrtle tree I planted last year called Strawberries and Cream...its color ranges from deep rich red to rosy pink and off white, cream color. The Strawberries and Cream crepe myrtle is in the back yard while the hot pink and lavender myrtles are in the front yard lining our driveway. Oh, and I almost forgot, in the 5th photo from the top....see if you can find the honey bee?!!

I thought I'd join the sorority of blogland. A new feature and a whole new concept of sisterhood. And as with joining any sorority, there IS an initiation. Yessiree. AKA 'Rush' week!! And the challenge for the inaugural post for this group is simple. The rules are posted HERE Also, the rush for initiation...
To rush you must do the following:

    Take this picture . . .

    and create something with it.

A banner, a hanging, an ATC,
    a piece of jewelry, a tag, a card . . . anything!
Print the picture and place it in a frame -
it doesn't have to be fancy!
Just use your imagination. The possibilities are endless.
You have inspiration all around you.
After all . . . that's what our blogs do - they inspire us.
This can be as simple or as elaborate as you like.

Then take a picture of your creation.
    There are no rules.
    Well - except one.

You must be in the picture too.

I made them in my photo program. I took a photo of some earrings, then, cut and pasted the image above into the lower portion. While all along, I added my profile image to the top portion....and then, made both to match in sepia tones. Both images are 'framed' in brass as the initiation rules state. It's the best idea I could muster today.

THURSDAY THUNKS

The TT questions are brought to you by Bud, the color of Atlantic Ocean and the number 3.

1. It became officially summer on Monday. What's your favorite part of winter? Where I'm living now, it's the best time of year!! Winter that is. It's not too cold, not hot, and the beaches are void of people most of the time!! Not to mention the big fat guy in a furry red suit and those eight little creatures he has trained so well.

2. What was your worst summer vacation ever? When I went back to a family reunion a few years back..I left Nebraska at the age of 6 and I didn't know anyone. Well, most of them anyway. Some 1st cousins yes, but holy crap?------2nd and 3rd cousins? Oh my. Besides the reunion was held right on a river bank...hot, sticky, snakes in the grass, mosquitoes galore and the food was either lukewarm when it was supposed to be served cold, and the food that should have been hot was NOT sizzling hot like it should have been. I was thinking all the time driving on the interstate to the hotel, I'd end up with salmonella.

3. Kimber's husband just got the dream job that he's hoped for. So a big shout out to her and Anthony! Tell us about the best job that you ever had. I really didn't have a 'favorite'...I put in my eight hours five days a week, had my annual 4 week vacation, and that's about it. It was a job. After a while each and every job gets to be mundane and routine.

4. Who is probably talking a load of crap about you right now? Well, my furbabies are calling me all kinds of names about now. I just shooed Winston off the hard drive and Tahoe was teasing him while she was on the desk...swatting them and telling them to go away, really p!ssed them off y'know. I know they're in the dining room right now plotting revenge on me in the dark sometime soon.

5. An alien appears and offers you the opportunity to repeat one year of your life. You will still know everything that you know now. He explains that no matter what you do differently, when you are returned to the present nothing will have changed. What year would you pick and why? I have to pick ONE year out of over 60? That's too difficult. I've had way too many good years in my life, I'd want to say all...but I know that would be against the rudiments. The why to not being able to answer my choice would be because I don't believe in aliens...the green dudes from area 51.

6. Name three things you have on you at all times. Explain why. Hair, skin and dandruff. Explain why? Ummmmmm, ever hear of evolution?

7. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper and mailed it? About a week ago...it was a complaint letter sent with a check!! Don't ask!! I actually got a voice mail from the recipient too, with an apology. That you don't hear of in this day and age....it put me in a state of shock.

8. If you could have everyone in the blogosphere read just one of your posts, which post would you pick and why? To save face here and make it easy on myself, I'd probably choose yesterday's...the turtles are too precious to ignore.

9. I recently read that the music industry continues to decline at an alarming rate. In the last year it said the sales of Michael Jackson's and The Beatles' music are the only artists who sales continue to climb. The article stated that the two are holding up the industry. Have you bought a CD or mp3 of either artist recently? Nope, don't like either one. That was the easiest question so far. How many does this make now, 9 questions? How much further...are we there yet?

10. What radio ad right now do you find so annoying that you'd rather have a tooth drilled than hear it again? Don't listen to the radio either. TV, now that would be different....the false promises of politicians are my least favorite.

11. Berleen walks into a bar on a hot Minnesota day. At the bar sits a priest, a rabbi and a minister. A ten foot duck walks into the bar right after Berleen. What drink do you think Berleen orders? With a DUCK in her midst it must be an EGG nog with brandy!!

12. There is a knock on your door. It can be anyone in the world. Who would you want it to be? John Beresford Tipton. Guess who that is? If ya don't know, look him up!!! I dare you...I double dare you.

13. What would be the worst entertainment or sporting that you could be forced to watch? I really don't consider this a sport of any kind...but it's aired on ESPN. World Poker Tour...what IS it with the dark shades/sunglasses on their faces? They all look like rejects from the mob! Boring...but I love to play poker!! Oh, and not to forget NASCAR...boring! Here's a puzzler for you ---I don't like Danish Cheese but I LOVE cheese danish. I know that isn't even close to answering the question but y'got me going!! You know how it is.

Sunrise at Padre National Seashore

Crowds gather - the speaker on Kemp Ridley Sea Turtles

Last Wednesday for my outdoor and watery posting I mentioned that Bud and I were going to drive out on the island to the Padre Island National Seashore -National Park. It's a fabulous place. It's gated...as is all national parks...with an entrance gate with a park ranger. Here you can camp, go to a very pristine area of the sand barrier that covers most of the Texas Coast from South Padre Island near the Mexico border by Brownsville, Texas...all the way to Galveston Texas. Each year, they have sea turtle patrols. And each year, the government parks try and preserve all the Kemp Turtle eggs and hatch them in incubators after the nests have been found and gathered, taking them to the reserve area of the park's headquarters here on north Padre Island. You may ask why the reserve is doing this? To preserve the nearly extinct species...now from predators such as coyotes, birds, snakes and even those who take their vehicles and drive over the nests. Bud and I went last week, to the first release of the season. There ARE several scheduled releases during the nesting season running anywhere from late May through late August...each year.

Onlookers at one side of the release. Volunteer 'flaggers' to ward off seagull invasion

Rangers releasing the hatchlings. The warm sea awaits the new arrivals...

It all started many many years ago. Between Mexico and Texas of course, is the huge vast waterway...the Gulf of Mexico. Mexican hunters would come ashore on the Texas land, and they found that turtle eggs were very tasty. At one time, there were a reported 40,000 nests. By the hunters consuming the eggs found...the numbers dwindled down to 500 and that's when the National Parks stepped in to protect them from extinction. With the protected species, the hatchlings are released. At first, the experimenting didn't result into much growth and come back...then, they realized that the turtles, and nature,....they needed to be able to 'imprint'. Imprinting means that the turtles needed the 'smell, the surroundings, the instincts' of their own kind...which is being able to walk the shores...in the sand, the seaweed, the water....getting the 'feel' of the land....in order to return to their own habitat the following years to re-nest. Slowly, the Kemp Turtles are making a come back. Each year, the found nests are growing in numbers. The incubation nurseries are working....slowly but surely.

Last Monday morning at sunrise, they released 114 hatchlings!! Of course with predators out there in the vast ocean waters, only a very few will survive the enemy....to return to Padre Island. This year, in 2010, there are scheduled releases of many more nestlings.....beginning last week and more scheduled up until the end of July.

It was a phenomenal experience. I found myself cheering when they were released and the first one made the slow trek to the sea...only to be washed back up to the sand with the incoming wave....but the last one to make it----tears flowed. It was like sending my own child out in the cruel world....

Bye, bye...so long, auf wiedersehen .....adieu!! I wonder if my new found buddies will return in years to come when they're mature enough to be full of eggs...hatching on 'my island'?!!! Hope to see you back here someday my little one--------

By the way....I learned something that day last week. When the eggs are in the incubator, it's the temperature raised for the hatchlings that make them either male or female. The warmer the 'nest' the more females are born. Didn't know that before.
