It's a bit of an emotional ride, this piece of art. It's something I thought of ordering while Erik was away from home...in boot camp in San Diego. No, not this piece but something quite similar. Only after he was back home from his tour of duty did I indulge myself, and bought one like I'd seen while he was away.. It has brought me courage sometimes, tears other times. The ups and downs emotions of a mom of a United States Marine. Pride...Fear and Patriotism. It's a music box. One that shows the Eagle Globe and Anchor of the USMC emblem atop a staffed Old Glory. When I think of what he went through for the first 8 weeks I am in awe of his stamina. When I listen to the music, tears well. Not only from the pride I feel of his accomplishing a dream of his, but for the sacrifices we as parents deal with during the time our children go off to war and are put in harm's way 24/7.

The reverse side shows you the sound construction of the art work and the golden finishing touches along with the distinct stars which are indented a bit for depth. The colors don't bleed....they are true Red, White and Blue. Around the base there are several pieces of ceramic tiles. The one on the back side has two simple words. SEMPER FIDELIS. The USMC motto.

The Eagle, Globe and Anchor lifts off. To reveal the wind key for the mechanism to play the music. And of course, the music is the United States Marines' theme....in all actuality, the title is the Marine's Hymn.

The other ceramic tiles around the base state COMMITTMENT [devotion to my Corps and fellow Marines], COURAGE [Do the right thing, in the right way, for the right reasons], and HONOR [integrity, responsibility, and accountability]. It's an original by Ardleigh Elliott, copyrighted in 2001. Numbered 2518 out of 5000 made.

A masqueraded glance
set off a quivering passion.
So beguiled was he,
he approached the flaxen-haired enchantress
and asked for that dance.
They, as one, promenaded
the hours away through the night,
fell in love before the dawn.
Only to be entranced forever;
the glimmer of life together...
the finale from
her first blue-eyed glance.

photos + 1

...talking about cameras and cellphones, I took these photos below with the cellphone. I had some great opportunities to take some really close photos of the waterfowl on our walk, but failed to take the digital camera with me. I was armed only with the cellphone camera. And, with that you have to nearly be right up within inches of the subject in order to get anything worth while. And with birds, you just can't get that close!! As soon as you get within a yard of them, if that close, they're up and flying away. So with these photos, I vowed to check out the 'idiot book'...you know, the Cellphone for Dummies book? Ya, that one....when I got home and see if there is a zoom lens...or I should say a zoom option. So bear with me on these photos below. I put mouseover captions with them and if you embiggen them, you'll be able to see them better I think:

Bud and I walked along the Packery Channel Tuesday morning. It was so nice; beautiful weather...in the mid 70s by 10 A.M. and the area was quiet except for a few fishermen along the banks of the channel and some others on the opposite side of us, walking to the beach as we were. The channel, on the island barriers along the coast, is where you can launch your yachts/boats to go into the Gulf. Most that travel this area are fishing boats; privately owned. When we got to the end of the channel and stood and watched the sea and the waves, a boat came back into the channel...there IN the channel, just in front of the boat, were three dolphins escorting them back. Of course each time I aimed the cellphone to the water after I would spot them, they ducked back into the water...so, no luck in capturing them on 'film'!! There were three, a momma and a baby at her side each time she breeched the water, and a third. Fun, fun...to watch!!

While there, we saw several birds of course. Love to watch the waterfowl in this area. I spotted a great blue heron, an egret, a couple of sandpipers, pelicans above us of course....AND a surfer!!! From the parking area, we opted to not drive on the beach and park this time, we parked in the boat ramp area and walked the half mile to the shore.

- - -

Then, when I got home, I finally took the time to sit down and go through the book that came with the cellphone. Yes indeedy!!! There is a zoom option!!! So, naturally I had to experiment with it....

Phone on...
Flip up...
Menu...
Camera...
Loading...
Snap photo!!

Options...
Save above photo...
Camera...
Aim...
Zoom in [option of 4 clicks for REAL close!]...
This is 2 clicks zoom...
Cool!

Hmmmmm, wonder what some other photos would look like? Curious are you? Me too!! So, here are some more with zoom option on the cellphone...

Oh, and a favorite subject of mine, who just happened to be on the table with all the St. Patrick's Day stuff...

So now I know there is a zoom option on the cellphone camera. If I remember how to do it when the time comes for the opportunity to zoom in on a heron on the shore or an egret or pelican or maybe a crab, or the scant chance of capturing a dolphin in the 'wild' untamed sea...that's the point here...IF I REMEMBER!!!

all indoor photos, except for the first one of the St. Pat's plate, were shot from several feet away.

This is the American Bank Towers. Lovingly called South Texas's "Twin Towers". Tho, they are NOT any more twin than I am! One's taller than the other compared to the real Twin Towers. Guess that's the mentality of those locals. The locals also call this a skyscraper. LOL,.......now come on, I'm from a large city, Denver. This is a skyscraper? Okay, maybe it is. But to me it's kinda 'rinky-dink'. Houstonians are probably laughing themselves silly at our boasting. But, this building, 48 floors high, is the tallest on the Texas Coastal Bend. The south tower, juts into the skyline some 411 feet. Tho we residents call it the Bank Towers the official name is One Shoreline Plaza. The South Tower, as you see, is graced with the American Stars and Stripes flag, while outside the 2nd tower, the North Tower, it has the Texas State Flag unfurled.

At ground level, there is some beautiful landscaping at the entrances, and lovely pool and fountain. [Yes, that's Bud as we were exiting the building]

7:03 A.M. Ack!!! While chatting with Irene, I was 'multi-tasking' with several tabs open....only to find out I tasked a delete button when I didn't want to do that... my wolf background!!! And it's not saved on my computer. Bummed, I am. #@!!#$! Oh well, guess it was meant to be. This layout I just made up quickly is probably easier on the ol' eyeballs anyway.

This week, it's heads OR tails.
CASE or ANYTHING THAT RHYMES WITH CASE

I'm early in posting this I know, but Bud and I did some work around the house, I'm tired...gonna take a long hot bubble bath and just sit and relax for the rest of the day and hopefully I'll sleep in tomorrow since I was up at all hours watching the Academy Awards and then too tired to sleep well. Z z z z z z z z z!!

This is the case and caper of walking along a wooded area near the outskirts of town ...near OSO Bay. It's a great place for bird watching. On the particular day we saw several species of waterfowl, but the photos I got aren't too clear. It's NOT the case I'm going to blog today. My case is that I'm thinking I watch TOO MANY movies!!! Things in life sometimes turn toward a script that becomes eerie. First tho, I posted a few photos along the bay [when it's all 'leafed out'] so you can get the area in mind HERE. And then, the photo on the right, I just liked the stark contrasts of the evergreen and the barren tree against it.

As you walk along the pathway surrounding the bay, it's very wooded. During midyear, the trees, as thick as they are, block your view of the bay mostly, but the greenery is so pretty [in the summer!]. This particular day I spied several trees budding and enoyed the colors of the yellows and chartreuse greens against the gray-white bark. The area, tho in the city, seems quiet and serene. AND the warning signs are always posted to stay ON THE PATH!! You ask: does this keep Anni from doing just that? Well, this past week, I DID go off the beaten path just to explore....it was cool enough to not have any snakes lurking about with their snaky lips dangling out for a tasty treat of my ankle. So, into the wood I go. Thank GAWD it was light enough, otherwise, when I came up this case scenario, I woulda been running like a banshee!!!.....Here's the case:

Picture this-
Movie - popular on the big screen circa: 1999
Scene - woodsy areas, dark, eerie
Legacy - A group out hiking comes upon some old film cans of three students who were shooting a documentary of the urban legend. Supposedly, the three never came back!! Near Burkittsville, Maryland, many children have vanished in the 1940s and people still avoid going too deep into the woods. Then, in October of 1994, three student filmmakers hike out to the woods of Blair, hoping to find evidence of a local legend "The Blair Witch". At first, they find nothing except a pile of stones arranged by hand.

Walking in these woods here at the park, tho illegal as all heck for the fact it's a wildlife, bird sanctuary and you'd disturb their habitat, I find that I'm not the only one that has been here!!! Just yards away from the banks of the bay, I came upon this. Tho the trees are barren from the winter's temperatures and the light of day fell through the branches above me, I couldn't help myself. I was IN THE WOODS, and the scene looked too evil to me!...........

....and trust me, it was a case of Anni scurrying out of the woods, back on the pathway; quoting from ANOTHER movie, where Mel Gibson as Sergeant Riggs says, as I was now saying to Bud "What did one shepherd say to the other shepherd?" Bud answerd: "Let's get the flock out of here." Thinking, Blair Witch Project. Or in this case, Oso Bay Witch Coven!! It was too Satan-like for me. No sir, no way will I go back there when the woods are thickened with foilage and dark as the night! Hmmmm, mmmm, no way José!!! Oh, and I didn't stop to look for any film canisters that day, either. Case closed.
My Fun Monday is directly below this....

As I predicted on my Sunday blog post, Slumdog Millionaire won the Best Picture! I just knew it would...it's all politicking in Hollywood these past few decades. I'm really delighted that a favorite of mine that I mentioned, Sean Penn, won for Best Actor!!!! His speech was so 'right on'!!! And Kate Winslet has really aged well from her Titanic days. I loved her regal look. It wasn't much of a surprising evening as for where the awards went....I loved the fact that Heath Ledger won....just as I posted yesterday. Now, as I also stated, it's all about the gowns. What was your favorite? I actually had three...Venessa's, Frieda Pinto's, and Ms. Portman's!!! Too many drab colors this year...and white? Lot of white gowns...I'm thinking that was all because of Ms. Obama's White Ball Gown in January?----it's now considered 'en vogue'? Oh, and I am compelled to mention the best dressed man of course....ummmm, does an Australian come to mind? Whoa.

Our hostess, challenges us to show n tell a part of our kitchen. To be more specific, the kitchen counter[s]. I have three counters actually. I'm showing two. The other is really small, a guesstimation is about 1 foot wide by 3 feet deep, and just off the right side of the electric range. [The only thing on that counter is my pitcher which holds all the cooking implements]

These two photos below show [one] 'the most unusual piece' in the kitchen [I guess]. It's a liquid soap dispenser. The theme throughout the kitchen and diningroom [which you can see partly from the kitchen] is nautical. Hence the lighthouse soap dispenser. It was actually found in the bathroom aisle of a store for lotion, but in my mind it was perfect for liquid soap. The other photo [two] is the partition of counter in the corner....with Bud's coffee maker, the blue glass bowl for fruit and the microwave and smoothie maker.

And the last two photos are the countertop to the left of the kitchen sink above the cupboards and dishwasher. The 'open' space you see above the sink and below the hanging cupboards is the raised, angled countertop that looks into the diningroom. The other photo is the cake topper. Yes, it's the bride and groom that was on top of our wedding cake. Don't ask me why it's in the kitchen [on top of the microwave actually]....it was placed there when we moved in 4 years ago and has been there ever since.

With Erik here for the weekend, he always wants me to bake him my vegetarian lasagna. He tells everyone that he knows that "My mom's is the easiest, best lasagna this side of the Mississippi." Well, that's what he says to me anyway. I think it's a ploy to get me to make it for him. And, it's easy. And no pre cooking! That's the part I like!!! I think I've told y'all how I make it, but someone in my comments that I read last night from my Saturday comments asked how I make vegetarian lasagna. Once again...

A box of Lasagna Noodles. [not the pre cooked kind!!]
Two cans of Italian Tomatoes
1 can of Italian Tomato Paste
1 pound of mozzarella cheese
1 pound sharp cheddar cheese [mild can be used if you'd prefer]
1 cup of Parmesan cheese
Schillings Italian Spice Mix
1 TBSP fresh ground garlic [or garlic powder]
Freshly ground Black Peppercorns to taste

Mix grated 2 pounds of cheese [mozzarella and cheddar]. Set aside. Mix in a blender the tomatoes, garlic, spices, Parmesan cheese, and tomato paste to a finely crushed sauce. Set aside. In a large oblong 13x9 pan, ungreased, pour a small amount of the tomato mixture onto the bottom and spread with fork, thinly. Add first layer of noodles [uncooked!!]. Add layer of cheese. Continue to layer, coating the noodles with tomato mixture until the pan is filled and the last layer is your cheese mixture for the top. Add a small amount of water to the edges...going around the entire pan [may not be necessary if tomato mixture is juicy!] Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8-10 hours. [I make mine around 8 in the morning and put in oven around 6PM] Bake, covered, at 350º Fahrenheit until bubbly and hot. Remove the aluminum foil and replace the lasagna back into the oven to brown. About 10-15 minutes. When cheese topping is lightly browned, remove from oven and let set for about 5-10 minutes. While this is cooling/setting up, pop into the oven a loaf of half-sliced [lengthwise] French Bread topped with garlic-butter and parsley to let brown and become crispy.....

[note] Photo shows that the cheese is not grated cheddar; this time I used Velveeta Processed Cheese instead of Cheddar. It was a request.

OSO BAY and Suter Park Bird Sanctuary

As you walk along the path, and toward the bay, you would come upon a boardwalk that juts out into the marshlands before hitting the water. Lots and lots of waterfowl you'll see if you're lucky. This photo, of course, is the walkway. As you walk along, every so often, you can stop and sit...the wooden structure has a few bird blinds where you're nearly hidden from the view of the birds. Field glasses are a good thing to take with you....but the day Bud and I walked along the shores and over the boardwalk, we carried with us nothing except for the cellphone. We happened upon several ducks in the marsh, an unknown species at the time, before I got home and looked them up on wikipedia, of black web-footed huge birds that were grouped together along the water outlet that runs into the bay, and a beautiful white one that was hidden [or so he thought] in the reed.

Off to our left, near the stream was a group of nine black web-footed birds. From our bird book that I have here in our library, I find that they could possibly be immature Cormorants. Look closely at the photo [embiggen it...it will open in a new window] and you can see all the black along the banks and perched on the wood. Those are birds. Sorry, the cellphone camera has no zoom!! Wish it did! The birds above, flying, are seagulls of course and a couple of ducks. The buildings you see over the marshland and on the horizon are part of Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. Way to the right, out of the lens viewing is part of the Naval Air Station where they have a test landing strip for Navy Pilot Training.

Along the way to the bird blinds at the end, near the opening of the bay's shore, I spotted a Great White Heron hiding in the reed, patiently waiting, hunting. As I stopped to photograph it, his eyes followed my every movement. Altho, he stayed put. These birds can become quite large at maturity. Some 50 inches or more. Oftentimes they are confused with the egret. The color of the legs usually can help you recognize which. They eat fish, snakes, frogs, and small mammals such as rodents. The image here shows you the view from the boardwalk...the 2nd one I cropped to get you a closer view....tho somewhat blurred from the actual enlargement.

The cropped photo:

...more to come on Tuesday for my Heads or Tails "Case" post. Stay tuned.

...and the Oscars.

Erik told me over the phone Friday that when he is here for the weekend he'll have to leave about 5 PM in order to get back to H-town before late hours, so again, tonight, I'll be glued to the TV for 3 to 4 hours watching the annual program that I have not missed in decades. But, this year it's a bit different. I've not seen many of the nominated films. The only ones on the list of nominees/nominated pictures are WALL*E, The Black Knight, Kung Fu Panda. I would have really liked seeing a favorite actor of mine, Sean Penn, in "Milk"...but it never ceases to amaze me, our town...so much protesting about the fact too. The fact: Seems there was a lot of censorship by the theater managers here and not too many people were happy with the outcome of it all. They [the managers] finally got the movie to show here, but when it was here, we were unable to get to the theater for its shortened run. I'll be sure to see it when it comes on DVD tho. We've purchased Changeling [DVD] last week at Wal Mart, starring Ms. Jolie which she has been nominated for best actress I believe, but have yet to sit down and watch it. Maybe Erik would like to see it with us if he hasn't seen it at the theather [both our kids are avid movie goers ...wonder where they picked that trait up?] In fact, I tend to think that will be the way I see movies mostly any more, on DVDs. Of course, when I go to the movies, even if it's the discounted matinee prices, the snack counter prices are so outrageous....and I need my junk food [popcorn, soda and Jr. Mints] when I see a film, I just can't see spending $30 for a movie, popcorn and soda. So, I'll save hundreds of dollars by buying the previewed movies that are 4 for $20 from Blockbuster, and buy the snacks for home at the grocery store instead!!

I'm still a fan of the movies!!! And I'm also a fan of watching all the glitz and glamour of the celebrities on this occasion tonight. I love to see the gowns, and be the fashion judge [LOL] of the color choices, the jewels, the amount of cleavage...etc. etc. etc. Not to mention this year....we have ummmmmmm, Hugh Jackman emceeing? Whoa!!! I'm predicting it will be quite political once again with Slumdog taking home the movie of the year trophy. If not, I will be totally, completely surprised. Seems these days Hollywood becomes involved in the politics keeping it more 'correctness' than fairness. We'll see. I do hope that they open their eyes and make Heath Ledger the winner for his role as "The Joker". He did one marvelous job of it. Otherwise, this year, will be just for the gowns and the ravishment of design of it all for me.
